CINA CERTIFICATION EXAM SITES CERTIFICATION REGULATIONS

The C.I.N.A. written examination is given annually on the Thursday of our Convention.

The C.I.N.A. written examination is given annually at the convention site. Other predetermined sites can be set, however, a minimum of 5 candidates is required.

A minimum of five candidates per site is required.

The certification exam is an objective test that covers the basic elements of intravenous therapy including:

  • anatomy & physiology;
  • fluids and electrolytes;
  • blood component therapy;
  • complications;
  • IV solutions and drug administration;
  • special considerations ie., pediatrics and TPN;
  • Central venous access devices
  • chemotherapy.

  • Plumers Principles and Practice of Intravenous Therapy, 5th 6th or 7th edition. Sharon M. Weinstein, JB Lippincott company.

  • Mosby's Medical and Nursing Dictionary
  • Intravenous Therapy Guidelines, CINA 1999
  • Practical IV Therapy, Julie Steele, Springhouse Corporation, 1996.

CINA has a supply of Plumer's Principles and Practice of IV Therapy 7th edition on hand. They are available at a cost of $80.25 per copy which includes shipping and GST.

A passing grade is 75%

The exam is available for CINA members. The fee for the exam is $100.00

Purpose of Certification

  1. establish a standard of knowledge required for certification thereby assisting employers, physicians, members of the health professions and the public
  2. measure the level of knowledge required for certifying intravenous nurses
  3. encourage professional growth of intravenous therapy
  4. formally recognize those individuals who meet all the requirements of the examination regulations of the CINA

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the CINA certification examination, candidates must meet the following requirements

  1. be an active member of the CINA in good standing
  2. complete and file the application form, diploma information form and full payment of the required fee
  3. enclose a recent photograph with your application

Candidates must advise in writing the CINA office in Toronto of their intent to write the exam and must forward full payment prior to the stated deadline. Only candidates who meet the criteria will be allowed to take the examination. Site transfer fee is $25.00. Cancellation policy: Notification must be received ten business days in advance or money will be forfeited.

Important: If the annual dues are not paid, the certification is no longer valid. Your employer will be advised that your certificate is no longer valid. IF CINA membership has been allowed to lapse for 12 months or more, the applicant must rewrite the examination for recertification.
