Quality
Development Workshops presents
Changing
Boundaries: Building the Continuum of Care ...Integrated Practice
The
task facing today's health care leaders is to create an integrated
health care system. The magnitude of that goal is best understood
in the face of realities that drive today's system. Creating and
evolving interdisciplinary, integrated practice is central to
the work of the new millennium. It requires us to ask these important
questions:
What
do we know about interdisciplinary integration?
How
will it change us personally and professionally?
What
are the deliverables?

CathSim
Intravenous Training System
CathSim
allows nurses, doctors, emergency medical technicians and other
healthcare providers to actually feel the "pop" of the catheter
needle going into the veins of simulated patients.
A venipuncture
procedure can result in undue patient harm if performed with a lack
of skill - yet there has been no satisfactory alternative to practice
on people. Current training often integrates the use of an orange,
grapefruit, or plastic model to give the feel of the needle going
through the skin. These training tools are not adequate. In late
1997, a Connecticut jury awarded $12.2 million to a resident at
Yale Medical School who was infected by the AIDS virus due to "inadequate
training in catheter placement techniques."
Lack
of training in this procedure is a leading cause of hospital-acquired
infections, which can cost institutions an additional $20,000 -
$30,000 per patient. Approximately 80% of hospitalized patients
receive intravenous therapy.
The
CathSim Intravenous Training system is the first computer-based
system to allow realistic practice of intravenous therapies prior
to patient contact.
The
PC-based CathSim system allows users to learn both cognitive
and motor skills associated with intravenous catheterization. CathSim
integrates a tactile-feedback robotic device called AccuTouch™,
which, under control, mimics the feel of the procedure. The software
incorporates HT Medical Systems' Telos ® technology, which has been
honored as a significant innovative media by both the Computerworld/Smithsonian
Awards and the DISCOVER Magazine Awards for Technology Innovative.
CathSim's
product launch follows a three-year multi-million dollar collaboration
effort between HT Medical Systems, a world leader in virtual reality
medical simulation, and the nursing program at the State University
of New York. Additionally, the U.S. Health Care Finance Administration
(HCFA) has signed a cooperative development agreement with HT Medical
Systems to incorporate features into CathSim that allows
hospital administrators to benchmark their performance in placing
intravenous catheters.
CathSim's
first software module includes six patient cases offering varying
levels of real-world difficulty and complications. Additional modules
- such as Central Venous Line Placement and Peripherally Inserted
Central Catheterization - will be available later this year.
